What you may be dealing with

The questions change at each stage of ACL rehab

Early recovery focuses on swelling and knee motion. Later, the challenge is rebuilding the strength and movement needed to run, jump and react.

01 /

Just injured

Your knee is swollen and stiff and you are unsure what to do before a surgical decision.

02 /

Pre-surgery

You want to get motion and strength in place so your recovery starts better.

03 /

Early post-op

You need to regain extension, control swelling and wake up your quad.

04 /

Mid-rehab

You are walking well but unsure how to build strength and begin jogging and jumping.

05 /

Late stage

You feel good but want to know whether you are ready for your sport.

Conditions we help with

What ACL rehab can include

ACL care is rarely just one thing. It can overlap with other knee structures.

Every surgeon's protocol, graft and timeline is different, and we work within your surgeon's restrictions.

  • ACL tears treated without surgery
  • Pre-operative preparation
  • Post-reconstruction rehabilitation
  • Meniscus injuries alongside the ACL
  • MCL involvement
  • Quad and hamstring strength deficits
  • Return-to-sport progression

Our approach

Rehab in phases

Progress depends on how the knee responds and on objective criteria, not only on weeks since surgery.

  1. 01

    Early phase

Control swelling, restore full extension and knee motion, and re-activate the quad.

  2. 02

    Strength phase

Progressive, increasingly heavy single- and double-leg loading for the whole leg.

  3. 03

    Running and impact

Progress walking to jogging when motion, swelling, strength and your surgeon's guidance allow. Introduce jumping and landing in stages rather than starting every impact task together.

  4. 04

    Return-to-sport phase

Assess strength, hopping, landing and sport-specific movement as appropriate. Add speed, change of direction and repeated efforts to inform return decisions.

Medically cleared is not the same as physically prepared

Medical clearance addresses healing and restrictions. Physical readiness also means having the strength, landing control, endurance and confidence your sport requires.

Return-to-sport testing may compare leg strength, hopping, landing and repeated efforts. Deceleration, cutting and change of direction are added when appropriate. Findings guide your next training stage and discussions with your surgeon; no single test determines readiness.

What ACL patients want back

Running in a straight line, landing from a jump and reacting to another player are different demands. Your intended sport determines which tasks need to be rebuilt.

  • Squatting and lifting at full capacity
  • Running and jumping
  • Pickleball, tennis and court sports
  • Golf and rotational sports
  • Rec-league soccer, basketball and more
  • Moving without thinking about your knee

Your plan builds toward the activities you choose, with progress reviewed along the way.

Good to know

Common questions.

When should I start ACL rehab?

Often as soon as your knee allows after injury or surgery, following your surgeon's instructions. Early motion and swelling control matter.

Can I do ACL rehab before surgery?

Many people do. The goal is to settle the knee and build motion and strength to go into surgery well prepared.

Will you clear me to return to sport?

We share your strength, movement and sport-readiness findings with you and your surgeon to inform return decisions.

How long does ACL rehab take?

ACL rehab commonly takes many months. The injury, other structures involved and your progress guide the timeline and milestones we review with you.

Can I follow my surgeon's protocol with you?

Yes. Bring your protocol and restrictions, and we will work inside them.

Do I need an ACL brace?

That is usually a decision made with your surgeon or physician. We can talk through what we see in the clinic.

Do I need a referral?

You can usually start with an evaluation without a referral under Florida's direct-access rules. Continuing care may require a referral, and insurance requirements vary; ask us about care requirements and your insurer about coverage.

How does payment work, and do you accept insurance?

We offer out-of-network and self-pay care, accept HSA/FSA cards, and bill Medicare directly. See our Insurance and Payment page for rates, superbills and plan-dependent reimbursement details.
