What you may be dealing with

Quick starts, low lunges and repeated shots

Quick stops, split steps and repeated overhead and backhand shots add up, especially when games turn into three-a-week habits.

01 /

Knee pain after stops and lunges

Sudden changes of direction and low lunges at the kitchen load the knee.

02 /

Shoulder pain on overheads

Reaching, serving and defending overhead can irritate a shoulder.

03 /

Elbow pain

A tender outer or inner elbow after gripping and repeated backhands.

04 /

Achilles, calf and ankle trouble

A calf strain, ankle roll or stiff Achilles after a long session.

05 /

Back soreness

Bending low and rotating repeatedly leaves some players stiff.

Conditions we help with

Pickleball injuries we see

Repeated play and sudden changes of direction can affect these areas. Your plan connects recovery to the shots and movements you need.

  • Knee pain and meniscus problems
  • Rotator cuff and shoulder pain
  • Tennis and golfer's elbow
  • Achilles and calf strains
  • Ankle sprains
  • Hip and low back pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Return to play after injury or surgery

Our approach

Getting you back to play

We combine treatment of the injured area with preparation for the court.

  1. 01

Find the load that bothers you

How many games, which shots and which movements bring symptoms on.

  2. 02

Strengthen what supports the court game

Legs, hips, calves, shoulder blade and forearm so you can handle volume.

  3. 03

    Practice court movement

Split steps, acceleration, deceleration, lateral movement and overhead reaches are added in stages.

  4. 04

    Manage the return

A plan for how to ease back into play, and how to adjust when symptoms flare.

Returning to court is more than feeling better at rest

Walking comfortably does not test the same demands as pushing off toward a short ball, braking at the kitchen or moving sideways for several games. Calf strength, knee control and repeated movement tolerance matter alongside symptoms.

Shoulder and elbow recovery also needs a plan for shot volume, grip and overhead play. Your return may start with shorter sessions or selected drills before adding longer open-play sessions. A sudden pop in the calf or Achilles, inability to bear weight or a rapidly swelling knee needs prompt medical assessment.

Good to know

Common questions.

Can I keep playing pickleball with pain?

Sometimes, with changes such as shorter sessions or avoiding certain shots. We advise you based on what is hurting.

My elbow hurts. Is it really tennis elbow?

Maybe. Elbow pain can come from the elbow itself, the wrist or even the neck. An evaluation sorts out what is more likely.

Is a knee brace or sleeve useful?

A sleeve or brace may improve comfort for some players, but it does not replace an assessment or rebuild strength. The choice depends on the injury and any physician recommendations.

Will pickleball be safe after a knee injury?

That depends on your injury, strength and recovery. We test and progress step by step, and decisions involve your surgeon where relevant.

I am older. Is physical therapy still for me?

Yes. Active adults of many ages are our patients. Plans are built on your current ability and goals.

Do I need a referral?

You can usually start with an evaluation without a referral under Florida's direct-access rules. Continuing care may require a referral, and insurance requirements vary; ask us about care requirements and your insurer about coverage.

How does payment work, and do you accept insurance?

We offer out-of-network and self-pay care, accept HSA/FSA cards, and bill Medicare directly. See our Insurance and Payment page for rates, superbills and plan-dependent reimbursement details.

How long are appointments?

Your evaluation and follow-up visits are full 60-minute, one-on-one sessions with the same physical therapist, with time for treatment, exercise and questions.
